Having a baby can affect your work, income and family arrangements. Check what support is available early so you can meet any application deadlines.
Work and time off
Employees may have rights to maternity leave, pay, time off for appointments and protection from unfair treatment. Tell your employer in writing by the relevant deadline.
Financial support
You may qualify for maternity pay, maternity allowance, child benefit or help with childcare. Eligibility can depend on your work history, income and household circumstances.
Pregnancy care
Contact a midwife, doctor or maternity service to arrange care. Ask for help promptly if you have concerns about your health or wellbeing during pregnancy.
Register a birth
Register your child’s birth within the required period. You will need information about the child and parents, and may be able to book an appointment with the local registration service.
