Fostering, adoption and surrogacy
Information about fostering or adopting a child, including from abroad, and surrogacy.
Overview
Fostering, adoption and surrogacy each involve legal processes designed to protect the child’s welfare. An approved agency can explain the steps that apply to you.
Fostering
Foster carers provide a home for children who cannot live with their birth family. You will be assessed, trained and supported by a fostering service before a child is placed with you.
Adoption
To adopt, apply through an adoption agency. The process includes checks, preparation and an assessment of your ability to provide a stable home for a child.
Adopting from abroad
Intercountry adoption has extra rules in both countries. Speak to the appropriate authority before making arrangements or travelling.
Surrogacy
Surrogacy arrangements have specific legal rules about parenthood. Get independent legal advice early, particularly if the arrangement involves another country.
