Childcare includes nurseries, childminders, nannies and out-of-school clubs. The right option depends on your child’s age, needs, location and your working pattern.

Choose childcare

Visit providers where possible and ask about availability, opening hours, fees, meals, activities and how they support children with additional needs.

Check a provider

Check whether the provider is registered or approved where this is required. Ask about safeguarding, staff qualifications and how the provider handles concerns.

Get help with costs

You may be eligible for funded hours, tax-free childcare or help through benefits. Each scheme has its own rules about age, work and income.

Childcare for school-age children

Schools and local providers may offer breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and holiday activities. Book early as places can be limited.
