Guidance
Business tax and returns
Understand your business tax responsibilities, file returns and make payments.
Overview
Most businesses must report income and pay tax. The taxes and deadlines that apply depend on your business structure, turnover, staff and activities.
Keep business records
Keep accurate records of sales, expenses, invoices, payroll and tax paid. Store records securely for the period required by the relevant authority.
Understand your taxes
You may need to account for income tax, corporation tax, value added tax, payroll taxes or other duties. Register for a tax when you become liable to do so.
File returns
Submit each return using the correct service and by its deadline. Check that figures agree with your records before you send them. You may be charged a penalty for late or incorrect returns.
Pay what you owe
Pay by the deadline shown for the return or assessment. If you cannot pay in full, contact the relevant authority as soon as possible to discuss your options.
